Introducing: IMA BetterBattery™
After two years of development, Hybrid-Battery-Repair.com is proud to unveil the first and only replacement battery for Honda IMA systems that is not made from the same old cells that Honda uses. These batteries are built from brand new cells that exceed the capabilities of the stock cells that came with your car. These cells are higher capacity than stock and run cooler than stock. This means that assist will last longer and the driver will see improved performance and economy.
How does the BetterBattery improve performance?
The lower internal resistance allows the IMA motor to draw more watts while simultaneously drawing less amps. The BetterBattery discharge profile results in a higher voltage under load, so wattage (Volts x Amps) is higher. Under identical test conditions, a standard battery delivered 10.5 KW to the IMA motor, while a BetterBattery delivered 11.5 KW - a 10% increase in power. If you have a manual transmission, this allows you to drive in 5th gear most of the time, and in one gear higher than you normally do. Here are two videos of 5th gear hill climbing in a 2001 Insight.
IMA BetterBattery™ cells are rated at 8.0Ah which is a 23% increase in capacity over the original 6.5Ah cells. Under testing, they stay 5°F cooler than the original cells. 20 bars of assist won't drop back to 10 bars after a short time because the battery won't start to overheat as quickly as the original pack.
How does the BetterBattery improve gas mileage?
Because of the lower internal resistance, your car wil regen at a higher maximum amperage and less power is lost to heat. This means that instead of a 12.5A charge (5 bars) coasting down at 30 mph (“coasting down” means to lift your foot completely from the accelerator and coast for a while), you'’ll instead see a six bar 15A charge. At higher speeds, this is more pronounced. At 55mph, you’ll see an 8 bar 20A charge. Why is this good? Because it happens when your car has turned off the fuel to your injectors and this larger regen has little effect on economy.
Even if you drive without using the battery you will see an improvement in gas mileage. Your car still has to charge the 12V battery and if your IMA battery is full, it will take the charge from the the IMA battery and slowly replace it from the IMA motor in a background regen (which reduces MPG slightly). Since the BetterBattery charges more efficiently, this regen has less impact on mpg. In addition, the IMA battery will charge completely. When was the last time you had all 20 bars full and so much power that there was no regen when you touched the brakes?
In July 2011, Hybridfest Green Drive Expo in Madison Wisconsin staged their annual MPG Challenge. This years's race was 18.2 miles of local country roads with rolling hills in a maximum of 36 minutes which gives a minimum average speed of 30 mph.
We ran the race course with a 2003 Civic that had a BetterBattery installed. The car had incorrectly sized tires so the distance and mpg is off slightly (3.3% higher = 74 mpg), but because the tires were not the correct low-rolling-resistance ones, it should actually perform better with the correct tires than in this picture.
Price:
IMA BetterBattery™ packs cost $2100 plus shipping. Because the housings are reused, there is a core charge of $200 for a Civic Hybrid pack. The core charge is refunded when you ship back your old battery. Because we also reuse the plastic support clips that hold the cells together, we need the old cells back too. We recycle old cells with a nationally recognized recycling facility. We will never send a single cell to a landfill.
Shipping and Handling:
We charge shipping and handling by shipping zone. These prices include round-trip shipping of your new battery to you and the old one back to us. The pre-paid return label is included in the box

Warranty:
Our BetterBattery modules carry a two year/unlimited mileage warranty that can be transferred to a new owner. In addition, if there is any problem within the first 90 days, we will pay the round-trip shipping costs.
Delivery time:
These cells are manufactured at our manufacturing facility in Asia (just like the original cells in your car were) and it takes time to get them to America. Lead time is currently six weeks as there are none currently in stock. A deposit is required to reserve a pack ($1000), with the balance plus the shipping and handling fee plus the core charge due when the battery is ready to ship.
